Sincerely, Michelle
After nationwide protests erupted as a result of George Floyd's death in the summer of 2020, finance columnist Michelle Singletary felt it was the right time to write a 10-part series addressing common misconceptions involving race and financial inequality. I worked with artist Eliana Rodgers to produce each illustration for these columns, which tackled subjects like affirmative action, redlining, reparations and microaggressions. I also designed each column's digital presentation.
What I learned as a Black woman writing about race and money
In a special 11th column, Michelle Singletary wrote about using her platform to address in a very personal way some commonly held misconceptions about Black people and the reader responses that she received in doing so.
Again, I worked with artist Eliana Rodgers to incorporate elements from the previous 10 columns into this illustration, which also depicts Michelle writing her letters that start with "Dear Reader."
