Washington Post Design – Instagram Refresh

The Washington Post Design team uses an Instagram account to showcase work by its art directors and designers. I took an interest in the page and worked to give it a cohesive look, as well as to define and implement new engagement strategies. Within a few months, we had increased our number of followers from 15,000 to more than 20,000. Much of the visual identity I helped create is still being used to this day.

Templates

I designed templates to accommodate the different types of content that the team worked on, which included newspaper pages and digital project screen recordings. By centralizing all of these in a single file, we were able to make sure that while each post was different and showed something unique, it still adhered to a cohesive look.

Color Palette

We decided to alternate using background colors for the grid, using black for every other post and a different color for the ones in between. Originally, our color palette was inspired by the other verticals of the Washington Post, such as the teal color from Launcher and the bright yellow from Voraciously. After a while, we decided on a more muted color palette that didn't clash as much with the stronger colors of the photos and illustrations that we were sharing in our posts, including a gray swatch that was intended only for election-related content.
